SF Jazz writes -
Named for the patron saint of musicians, GRAMMY winner La Santa Cecilia is on a meteoric rise as one of the most visible and celebrated Latin bands to emerge from the L.A. music scene in recent years, bringing universal songs of love, hope and heartbreak to audiences around the globe. With a gutsy, passionate voice that recalls both salsa great Celia Cruz and counterculture icon Janis Joplin in equal measure, vocalist Marisol Hernández began her musical path when she was a child, singing boleros and rancheras for spare change on Olvera Street, Los Angeles’ historic Mexican-American cultural hub.
She met the future members of the group during these weekend street performances, and they worked through the club scene and festival circuit to become international headlining artists, drawing in influences from Latin American folkloric styles as well as rock, folk, blues and jazz. The band’s major label debut, Treinta Díaz (30 Days), was a critical and popular smash, featuring a song co-written and sung by indie-rock god Elvis Costello and winning the 2014 GRAMMY for Best Latin Rock Album. Their newest release, Someday New, further cements La Santa Cecila as Latin music stars, with songs of love and social consciousness, and an arresting new interpretation of The Beatles classic "Strawberry Fields Forever."
