Don’t be startled if an (even shorter) version of drug lord Chapo Guzmán appears at your door this Halloween asking for candy.
A costume of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, which includes a latex mask and a traditional white-and-black striped prison uniform, is available on websites such as Mercado Libre, where it sells for around $20.
The back of the prison shirt reads #NoEraPenaldeMáximaSeguridad, or “it wasn’t a maximum security prison,” a hashtag that people have been using on Mexican social media to criticize the government’s failure to keep Chapo behind bars.
Mexicans regularly satirize some of their worst demons throughpiñatas and masks. Whether it’s to celebrate Halloween or Mexico’s traditional Día de Muertos, Mexicans wear masks depicting scandalous figures from society, including timeless classics such as former President Carlos Salinas de Gortari.
The Chapo costume, which both mocks and reinforces so-called narco culture in Mexico, allegedly comes with other useful accessories like a shovel for tunneling towards freedom.
In July, the drug lord escaped from the maximum security prison of Altiplano through a 1-mile tunnel that led from a hatch in his cell to an outside warehouse. His brazen and second escape embarrassed the Mexican government and added to Chapo’s narco legend.
