First Latina In Space, Ellen Ochoa, Inducted to Astronaut Hall of Fame
Chicana Ellen Ochoa made history when she became the first Latina EVER to go into space in 1993
Growing up in Mesa, California, Ellen never thought of going into space; in those days, women couldn't be astronauts. Now, she is the first Latina and second woman to serve as the director of the Johnson Space Center!
Ellen graduated with a master's and a PhD in electrical engineering from STANFORD! Her dedication was inspired and nurtured by her mother, who went to college for 20 YEARS, taking just one class each semester while she raised her children.
Since becoming an astronaut, she has been on 4 space flights and logged almost 1,000 hours in space!
In May, Ellen will be the first Latina to be inducted to the Astronaut Hall of Fame. FELICIDADES!
