NORA CAMPOS A HOME GROWN LEADER FOR WOMEN, LATINOS AND SOUTH BAY FAMILIES

Assemblymember Nora Campos was first elected to the California Assembly in 2010 after previously serving ten years as a San José City Councilmember for District 5.

Representing Assembly District 27, Nora has served as the State Assembly Speaker Pro Tempore in 2013-2014 and currently serves as the Assembly’s Democratic Whip and Chair of the Budget Sub Committee 5 on Public Safety. In addition to the numerous committees she sits on; Budget, Public Safety, Rules and Transportation to name a few, Nora is also the appointed Assemblymember to the Commission on the Status of Women and Girls.

Due to term limits, Nora will be unable to run for a fourth Assembly term in the upcoming November election. Seeking to continue her work in public service, Nora is running as a Democratic candidate for the California State Senate, District 15.

Growing up in a working-class neighborhood and inspired by her parents’ work within the farm worker movement alongside César E. Chávez, Assemblymember Campos began her career seeking economic, social, environmental and political justice as a young girl marching alongside farm workers.

As a result, Assemblymember Campos understands that part of the success of California’s future is dependent upon growing and diversifying the state’s tax base. As a result, one of her primary legislative priorities includes job creation and economic growth. Throughout her tenure in the State Assembly, Nora has worked to advance incentives geared toward keeping thousands of jobs in the State of California.

REVITALIZING NEIGHBORHOODS IN SAN JOSE

During Assemblymember Campos’ tenure as a councilmember from 2001-10, one of her most notable accomplishments was turning a neglected, high-crime area in San Jose into a bustling shopping center that increased the economically struggling community’s tax base by 105 percent. As a part of her efforts to create this robust public-private partnership, she was able to attract four financial institutions to serve this area, where there had been none for more than 30 years.

Assemblymember Campos was appointed in February 2013 to be one of the Assembly’s representatives on the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls.

Many groups have honored Assemblymember Campos for her dedication to public service, including the Clean Water Coalition, California Latino Legislative Caucus Institute for Public Policy, Lupus Foundation of Northern California, Tech America, La Cooperativa Campesina de California, the Little Saigon-San Jose Foundation, the League of California Cities’ Latino Caucus, the Santa Clara County Democratic Club, and the American GI Forum Women of California.

Campos currently resides in San José with her husband and son. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Francisco State University.
