Harvard Law School alum Sam Liccardo, 41, announces his goals for San José with his campaign signs: “Safer city, smarter government.” The City Council member from District 3 came in second during the June 2014 primary election, which had a low turnout. Shortly after, during a press conference, current Mayor Chuck Reed announced that he endorsed Liccardo, stating, “Sam is honest, he's got integrity, and will do right by the residents and tax payers of San Jose."

Liccardo’s History of Service

Serving as a Santa Clara County prosecutor and then as a councilmember, Liccardo is known for playing by the rules. His tactics have helped him pass more city-related proposals than his mayoral challengers. In addition to volunteering at homeless shelters and local schools, Liccardo helped bring BART and other transportation solutions to San José.

Liccardo’s Platform

As mayor, Liccardo hopes to:

  • Make the city more responsive, responsible and transparent.
  • Increase public safety by improving the response times of police and emergency services.
  • Make San José more attractive to businesses to grow its economy.
  • Improve the quality of education in public schools.
  • Provide better housing services for homeless families.

Being married to Jessica Garía-Khol, Liccardo is familiar with the struggles that Latinos face and the issues that matter to them. He traces his roots to San José deeply; his family was among the first Mexicans to establish San José. Sam’s heritage can be traced to first Mexicanos that arrived in San Jose.

Not interested in quick fixes, Liccardo has a long-term vision for San José. The candid politician stands by his convictions, even if they may not make him popular
