We consulted friends, co-workers, and hot food aficionados, and here are our top salsa choices.

The Best Salsas in San Francisco

Best Overall Salsa: Casa Sanchez
This is a no brainer. Fresh, simple ingredients that will bring you back to how mamá used to make it. In particular, their Hot Salsa Roja gives just the right sting of the tongue, balanced with the sweetness of the tomato and a fresh kick cilantro, it’s the overall most satisfying and versatile salsa we have found.

Best Salsa you Can’t Buy: San Jalisco
Unlike Casa Sanchez, this red salsa isn’t available for sale at stores, but this was the best salsa served at a restaurant in SF. It is not for the faint of tongue, it is hot my friends, and we loved it! You can add a dash of salt to soften it up if eating straight with just chips. Similar to Casa Sanchez, but slightly smokier flavor, and the taste of lime stands out more.

Best Salsa that Comes out Different Each Time: La Cumbre
Though this isn’t marketed at all, you can buy pints of all the salsas at La Cumbre Taquería if you ask at the counter. Our all-time favorite is the green tomatillo salsa. Some days it comes out mild, and some days white hot, but it is always creamy, with crunchy bits of white onion.
