El Chapo's family registers trademarks

The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) has recently approved four trademarks related to the Sinaloa Cartel after relatives requested 24 different brand name registrations.
It was two women said to be Guzmán’s wives, Alejandrina Salazar and Emma Coronel, and his daughter Alejandrina Guzmán, who applied for the different trademark registrations.
Among the requested brand names were several variations on Guzmán’s infamous nickname: El Chapo, El Chapo Guzmán, El Chapito and Don Chapo Guzmán.
The IMPI authorized Alejandrina Guzmán the use of the brand El Chapo for four different marketable product categories, which include precious metals, jewelry, watches, leather and faux-leather, toys, gym and sports articles, and Christmas tree ornaments, among others.
The registered brands appear in the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Global Brand Database, and the listing prevents others from using the Chapo-related brands.
The IMPI also authorized the use of El Chapo to Raúl Espinoza, Ernesto Pérez and María de los Ángeles Moreno, who are permitted to commercialize scientific, nautical, topographic, photographic and cinematographic equipment, as well as costumes, footwear and headwear.
An unusual category of products includes equipment and instruments to be used in education and training, and in cultural and sports activities.
The relationship between the three applicants and Guzmán is unknown.
While several applications were aimed at marketing the same items with different names, some brands were specific for a certain kind of product. A tequila brand was to be known as Don Chapo Guzmán, for example.
